Instructor Training – South Carolina State University

Cybersecurity
October 2015

Marcraft visited South Carolina State University to provide instructor training in support of the school’s cybersecurity training initiatives. The session introduced the Cybersecurity Essentials (CS-1000) program and allowed instructors to review key components of the curriculum.

Overview of the Cybersecurity Essentials Program

The Cybersecurity Essentials program is structured around the National Institute of Standards (NIST) framework and introduces students to major areas across the cybersecurity field. The course progresses from foundational security concepts to more advanced topics such as network protection and introductory penetration testing. This structure helps students build awareness of how different cybersecurity domains function together in modern environments.

Hands-On Equipment Used in Training

The program includes practical activities supported by eight dedicated training stations. Students work with equipment such as security controllers, sensors, surveillance cameras, DVRs, servers, switches, routers, firewalls, IoT devices, PLC and SCADA components, virtualization tools and multiple operating systems. This mix of hardware helps learners connect theoretical concepts with real-world applications.

Key Topics Included in the Curriculum

The CS-1000 course introduces subjects such as infrastructure security, surveillance technologies, host protection, local and enterprise network security, internet security, edge defenses and industrial and medical cybersecurity. The curriculum concludes with an introduction to penetration testing to help students understand offensive security at a basic level.
